Haute for one, haute for all

Georges Chakra, the Lebanese haute couture designer best known to the American audience for dressing Beyonce, Rihanna, Carrie Underwood and Queen Latifah on the red carpet, showed his first ready-to-wear line this Valentine’s Day at the tents.

Edition by Georges Chakra showed hyper-glossy sculptural cocktail dresses, long floating taffeta skirts and glittering gold gowns fit for a night on Jay-Z’s arm. The collection was designed for a “sophisticated, chic New York woman,” Chakra told us backstage. (Although we’d like to be that woman, the $3,000-$6,000 price points remain a stark reminder that ready-to-wear may not translate to ready-to-buy this season.)

Sitting first row was a cheery new fan of Chakra’s, Jennifer Love Hewitt. “It’s my first show ever, I’m thrilled to be here,” said Hewitt. Just in town for a whirlwind weekend of fashion, the actress looked camera-ready at 10:00 a.m. in a black Dolce and Gabbana dress and a high ponytail. Recently split from Scottish actor Ross McCall, Hewitt had big plans for a girly Valentine’s Day with her best friend (who attended the show with her). “We’re going to dinner. We’re having a girl’s Valentine’s Day and we’re excited about it,” she grinned, “Girls do it better than guys anyway.”

Also front row was Kellie Pickler and Bravo reality star Jill Zarin. Zarin told us the first episode of season two’s Real Housewives of New York City is “toxic” due to a big public fight. The NYC socialite still doesn’t mind watching herself on TV, though. “I thought it would be weird (to watch myself),” she said, but, “no. It’s like a home video. I love it.” -Andrea Mandell
