Real-Life Redo – Before & After – Traditional Home

Real-Life Redo – Traditional Home®.

See photos here.

Before she was one of The Real Housewives of New York City, which began airing its second season on Bravo TV in February, Jill Zarin was a mom, wife, sometimes-socialite, and flex-hours associate in husband Bobby’s family business, Zarin Fabric. As a housewife (lowercase “h”), she did her home decorating with a lowercase “d” — that is, for the appreciation of her family and friends, period.

This year, though, little that Jill does escapes the viewing public. For example, the show recently televised the fund-raiser for orphans that Jill hosted at her Hamptons house last summer. So when she decided to redecorate the Upper East Side apartment she shares with Bobby and her 17-year-old daughter, Ally Shapiro, she knew fans would be watching.

“Naturally, I’m a little nervous,” says the otherwise self-confident redhead, shown here with her beloved Chihuahua, Ginger. “People will either love what I’ve done or hate it,” she frets.

I love the picture of you and congratulations on the cover. I don’t know why Gloria didn’t like the upsweep hairstyle because I think you look very sophisticated and lovely! You can wear it both ways.

    JILL!
I LOVE YOU! This last episode that aired “working housewives” seperated you from everyone else in my eyes! Your such a lucky women but you deserve it! Now when I go back, Alex saying your jealous of her is completely ridiculous! IM JEALOUS OF YOU and so is everyone else in America now! WHAT RECESSION?! Bethenny has always remained on my good side but after she did that impression – OH MY GOD! She is to die for…I wasnt ever really a fan of Kellys but this episode kind of made me switch sides. Ramona is just plain crazy, calling Bethenny out like that. WHO IS RAMONA? It all worked out for B in the end though because complete strangers were drooling over the fact that Bethenny was even in the presence and then defended her when Ramona made those ridiculous comments. Alex. . .pshh, that girl. I kept seeing YOUR birthday- -and the HER birthday. HAHA that poor woman. I LOVE YOU JILL! Keep being yourself, your gonna make Bravo’s bank account sky rocket!

Your new crib is a lot more airy. Love it!

    Dear Jill,
There was a wonderful book that captured the hearts of millions called “A New Earth-Awakening to your life’s Purpose” by Ekhardt Tolle. In it he speaks about the ego and how it always gets us into trouble in our lives. In all episodes of this series I see every one of the cast reacting to the others with their egos. Yes, you may all be wealthy but you need to develop more character and keep your egos in check to become more in tuned with other people. It is heartbreaking to see Bravo support that which is the most shallow in our human character. The very term “Bravo” isn’t appropriate for this kind of programming. I’d like to see the cast become less ego driven and more compassionate in reference to other people. A sure sign of growth.

Hey, Jill – you are so awesome. So much style and no matter what your wonderful mom says, I loved your hair up for the photo shoot. PLUS I love love love your apartment. LOVE Brad, too – cracked me up when he got a buzz on and wanted maxmaxmax. You and your hubby and daughter are such a NICE family which is so refreshing to see. So kudos, Jill and keep it up!

Jill! I LOVE you on the show! You’re the only one with any class and the cattiness from the other housewives, including Simon, is becoming a bit exhausting. Your daughter is absolutely beautiful and your husband is the one and only true gentleman on it! Brad did a fabulous job on your home, and as a designer myself, hope to use it as inspiration for future projects.

After reading your last blog on the Bravo website, I like you even more! You tell it like it is and you totally put everyone catty enough to judge you in their place. Who are they to tell you how to spend your money? You work hard, you’re successful, you can afford it, you deserve it!!! What, is it all of a sudden every millionaires job to take care of the people struggling in this economy?! Now every person who enjoys and can afford the finer things in life are considered selfish??! If I had the money, I would have bought that fabulous bag myself…AND some fab shoes to go with it!! :) Why viewers even take the time to come to your page just to be judgmental is beyond me. I hope after reading your blog, people realize that you’re an actual person with feelings just living your life like any one of them, instead of thinking you’re just some actress on a TV show they think they have the right to judge. I swear, sometimes people take this show a little TOO seriously…Enjoy your success!!

    Hello

The colors in your apartment are amazing. In regards to the comments about the Housewives spending habits; You work hard,it’s your business.

The last show appeared more of an info mercial; than a story.

I have enjoyed the past shows, Your photos are lovely.

I also like your hair both ways. As I am new to this, my comments may cover generalities. The first year of h-nyc I thought all the housewiveds looked dumpy compared to h-oc. Luann had the only decent hair. Alex’s was the worst. Sorry , Jill, OMG the color was atrocious (sp) well, really bad. Wow, this year, you look very svelt and sexy. Your hair has style and movement and has life in general. Ramona doesn’t look soo dumpy and Alex’s hair is so much better. I would buy Bethwnny’s book and give it as a gift 1000 times over rather then Luann’s. She reminds me of Goldie Hawn in Overboard. “Everybody wants to be ME” Do people in New York REALLY care about Countess’s or Counts? It’s the eppitomy of shallowness. Can’t impress people of “this” is what I’m made of? Well, I’m a Count. So, Count that. Puuulease. I will look at Ally’s website later. Work now. P.S. Went by Zarins last year when I was in New York, but didn’t have time to stop. I need approx 60 x 60 piece of Dupioni Silk. Got any? What’s your best deal?

Hi, Jill! I have watched both seasons and my thoughts of everyone on the show has changed. You are Fab-U-Lous right along with your gay hubby (and real one, too). Out of everything that has happened to all of you, I have to say you held your own against Mario. He NEVER should have gotten into your face and made such a big deal out of this tennis thing. I watched in horror as he mocked you and got in your face.

    Over. And. Over. Again.

If that is what wealthy New York men are like…you can keep them! Crack heads have more class than that!

No matter where your life takes you, please keep being true to yourself. In the end, nothing else matters.

  10. Marci said:

You and Bethenny are the best! You are two peas in a pod and really stand behind and support each other. Kepp it real and keep knocking heads off when catty people get in your face (Mario).

Jill, read your Bravo blog and I agree with Gloria, I love your hair down.. You have gorgeous hair and you look young, young, young, with it down. But your dress is fabulous and you seem so tiny which I suspect you are in person anyway.. definitely cannot wait to see the magazine.

I guess you were not at the A list horror show.. I tried, in vain, to catch only the fasion show.. Yikes! What a misconceived event- the wanna be celebs and all, almost embarassing.. And the humor is too vulgar for my taste.. shame on Bravo.. Let’s hope this is its last year.

  12. Janie said:

    Hi Jill~
Love the photo shoot, you looked spectacular and as a “dog mom” I love that you had your little baby with you in the photos. As for the drama with Mario, he isn’t worth the time and the effort, you, Bobby and Ally are so much above the childishness they display every time they are shown. I realize there is a lot of editing and it may not be what we see but God Bless you for being the beautiful person you are.
I wish you all the best.

  13. Joyce from LA said:

Okay, one more comment since everyone is talking “Housewives”.. I cannot understand the hanging earrings with the glitzy necklaces on everyone lately.. Even Bethenny gets this wrong. She didn’t like your gorgeous turquoise in the Hamptons saying your were “over accessorized” but honestly, she should have let the turquoise alone- I liked it just as it was.. but she and some of the others are going overboard with this stuff.. The worst offender is Ramona.. Sure she’s showing off her fake jewelry line but she makes it look cheap no matter the style..and with ruffles yet! Not very classy. I think Luanne looks elegant because of the way she carries herself, her understated clothes and jewelry.. and, hey, I love diamonds, don’t get me wrong. But the high scoop necklines with the 9″ diamond necklace and the hanging earrings.. no ma’am.

  14. Tamara said:

$16,000 for a purse? Your vulgar spending is out of control and you should be ashamed.

Also, trying to attach yourself to every known charity to feed your guilt, is very obvious and you aren’t fooling anyone.

You are a spoiled glutton and have completely humiliated yourself on national TV.

    Hi Jill:

Love the show. We are originally from NY and we love to see and hear you talk – it reminds us of home. You have so much class, please do not lower yourself to Mario & Ramona’s level and please stay on Bethany’s side when it comes to Kelly. Kelly is definately strange. You need to share with us how you and Bobby make it work. You both look so happy together – tell us your secret.

  16. maya said:

    Dear Jill,
I hate to say it, but I think your apartment renovation was featured in the Traditional Home just because you became a celebrity and they need to sell more magazines. No, your home is not decorated with style but you love it and that is what matter the most. Alos, I think your mom is right about the hair…

BTW, is this the place where you all live daily in NY, with Bobby and Ali?

Jill, I love your show, and I think your husband is fabulous. I’m looking forward to seeing your home in Traditional Home as it is one of my favorite decorating magazines, in fact, I save them and look at them over and over again. Now, as far as the other ladies go this is what I think: Ramona, her mouth runeth over. Does she have ADD or somethin similar? I love her, but I think she needs to lock her mouth and throw away the key. Her husband is a doll and displays a lot of patience with her. Is he that way when the cameras aren’t rolling? The countess is a delight, but you know, when people come from very modest backgrounds they tend to act like her. She does a lot of good so I can forgive that kind of behavior. I just read in the papers that she and her husband are divorcing. Bethanny is adorable, and I know some day she will meet the man of her dreams. I am so happy she split from her former lover. After all, he was not that into her. The person I find the most difficult to like is KELLY. How dare she lord it over on Bethanny. This woman lacks graciouness, and frankly, I think she’s jealous of Bethanny. Bethanny, after all, made a magazine spread in the Hamptons which is Kelly’s stompimg grounds. Getting back to Ramona, when I think about the confrontation she had with Luann and Simon I shake my head in amazement at her behavior. She needs to attend a manners class. Keep up the good work Jill – I can’t get enough of your show, and I hope there is another segment in the future. If I am ever in New York and I’m near Zarins I will stop in. I am a frustrated decorator and I’m fascinated with beautiful fabrics.

    Dear Jill,

Just got back from having my hair done and the salon had a copy of Traditional Home. Loved the article! Triple loved the family pic. Beautiful job on the apartment, very cohesive and airy. Wonderful how Brad considered how you would look in the apartment when he was picking colors. It is very spa-like and elegant now. Enjoy much happiness there!

    Hey Jill….

I love you on the show. I love that you are real and say how you feel. You have a beautiful family and I love the renovation you did on your apartment. I have to say, that handbag you were considering on buying in the last episode I saw (red bag costing $16,000) would pay off my debt and change my life! My husband and I can not afford a vacation because we have this debt over our heads….and the wow factor of buying a $16,000 handbag blew me away!!! Trust me, it doesn’t make me love you any less…I am happy in my life don’t get me wrong. It just was a very sobering moment for me…

    Be blessed always,

Love you Jill, love Bethanny, Bobbie is great – I’m even getting to like Simon especially after the tennis game! Where were you on Bravo A Awards – Missed you! Who is this Kelly doll? She really brings nothing to the show, at least Alex and crazy eyed Ramona you could enjoy! Mario, please! Poor Countless…….

Have to tell you I LOVE GINGER! I had a rescue Chi named ChiChi with one blind eye that when I rescued her she was about 9 years old and we had her for an additional 6. She was my “third breast”. She passed away 8/4/07 – seeing Ginger has brought her back to life for me – she looked like a Ginger Senior Citizen!

You are my fav on the show, love watching it, actually I am addicted to it!

Hi Jill , I love to watch the show although sometimes I cant believe how everyone talks about each othere knowing it is being filmed and will get back to them.I dont care for Kelly she has added absolutley nothing to the show, and “countess” drives me crazy. She is a bit to arrogant. I think you are the most real . You tell it like you see it, and your family seems more normal. Your mother was great glad you included her. Gotta love Ginger whats a home without a dog!! I am a real dog lover. Keep those shows coming I look forward to watching!

Tamra, I’m sorry I just need to ask, what exactly is it that she should be ashamed of? How is it any of your business how she spends what she earns? It’s her success. Get over it.

Another thing, you honestly believe there are people out there that donate their time and money to a charity out of guilt? Why take such a positive and meaningful situation that so many people hold near and dear to their heart, as Jill does with her daughter, and turn it into something so vulgar and negative? You just humiliated YOURSELF. Envy is not an attractive trait.

    Hi Jill,
Like many, you are my fave for sure. That nasty comment about being a glutton is someone that does not appreciate capitalism, hard work and appreciating the fruits of your labor. I despise this attitude. I come from a Retail background as well and until you’ve done it, a person cannot understand the amount of work, time and sacrifice that goes into the day to day ops of a brick and mortar business. To achieve your level of success should be praised, commended and used as an example of the American dream. Cheers to you and yours! You absolutely crack me up. You and Bethany make the show. You’re a doll. (p.s., my husband has always wanted a dog that licks his nose….I showed him your little dog and he couldn’t believe it…so funny!) Cheers!

  37. Patti said:

Hi Jill, LOOOOVE you and Bethenny! I’m not quite sure if Ramona is rude or just plain clueless…I particularly like it when she attempts to use “big words” ie those with more than two syllables. And what’s with the eyes??!! Alex & Simon are socialite wannabes and it cracks me up to listen to them:”We’ll fill the shelves with Dickens & Shakespeare so the boys can just grab a book and read.” PUL-EASE!!! The countess should no more be writing a book on etiquette than Alex & Simon should be writing one on child rearing. Kelly’s such an airhead that she actually makes Ramona look semi-intelligent. They deserve to be friends. I love your obviously good heart and Bethenny’s quick wit.
I too hope that you bought the ballgown – it looked FABULOUS on you!
Many blessings to you and your family.

Hi Jill- I thought your hair looked right with the dress and apartment! The apartment remodel, from what we could see, looks amazing. But I agree about the POP tables. Traditional Home is one of my favorite mags and I can’t wait to see your article. You are a very pretty women, lots of style and class and I enjoy watching you. I thought the working segment was fun. So Mario thinks you don’t work. He was so rude and out of line. I would have been tempted to “punch him out”. That was good having Simone play. I like Simone and Alex, and don’t see that they are such bad parents. Bethany, is a doll and very funny too. And the Countess,I read her book online and thought it was very good. Gave lots of insight. I’m buying both books. By the way, the money you spent on the handbag will be spent by others… that’s how it works! Love the show.

  39. Dar said:

    Hey Jill,
Did you really feel like punching Mario? I did. He acted like a big baby, while Bobby was adult about the situation.

    Dear Jill:

You appear to be the only “real housewife” with character and a sense of self. You are such a wonderful person, that I absolutely cringe every time I see you in the presence of Ramona and Mario. The Singers are a virus spreading disease wherever they go. They have absolutely no redeeming qaulities and they will do anything to destroy anyone who has a positive attitude. You are one of their targets, if not the main one. You have a strong sense of self, and the Singers perceive that as a threat. They (especially Ramona) are extremely jealous of you and Bobby, and the wonderful life that you lead together. They are such unhappy people! They need to tear people down in order to feel good. They derive a sick high from watching their victims writhing in the misery they caused. Ramona’s inner ugliness shows on the outside. She is so incredibly unattractive and disgusting that she should be required by law to wear a full body cover when out in public. I say all of the above, as a preliminary to stating that from my viewpoint (which I realize you can take or leave), it would be so much to your advantage to keep a very great distance between yourself and the Singers. They are poisonous! Their venom is deadly and you are one of their targets! Just a word to the wise from someone who has been the victime of people like the Singers.

    Jill,
Being who you are is your best quality. You are a great role model to Bethanny. Her mouth runneth over gets her in trouble and sometimes makes her look like she is bitter towards you, but I believe that she truely loves you and means well…always!! I don’t think that you have to curb anything that you do or say for next season, it will make the show sooo boring and will make you look and sound fake.. Be who you are and rock on!!

  42. Carole Babb said:

    Dear Jill:

In my prior e-mail, I forgot to include my comments on how absolutely beautiful your apartment is – the results of the remodeling came out perfect! The color schemes are fantastic and the apartment speaks of both class and warmth at the same time. Although it is extremely evident that quite a bit of money was spent on the makeover, it does not come out looking pretentious, but rather – the overall feel throughout the apartment is that of a home that is filled with love and welcoming to friends. Thank you for sharing the photos with all of us – I, for one, truly enjoyed looking at them!

    Jill,

I have to say I do watch the “Housewives” shows for a laugh. The pretentiousness, the over the top self involvement, etc.
I have to say that you were a very pleasant surprise. You and Bethanny are honest, real people.
Please know that there are some of us out here who are actual housewives, laughing hysterically at the idiocy of the self importance of some of ….ok all of your castmates except for you and Bethanny.

You seem caring, a great wife and mother and happy with your life. You don’t make yourself out to be better than others, you’re not judgemental and I can honestly say I don’t laugh when you’re on the screen.(ok..I do laugh with you..not at you as I think you also have a great sense of humor)
Don’t allow any of the cattiness to bother you.
Genuine people can spot other genuine people a mile away and personally I think the others (besides Bethanny) are jealous at the fact that you are happy.
I wish you all the best.

I’m with everyone else…just love you and Bethany! I think it was insulting for Ramona to say Bethany is your charity case or whatever, you can see how much you both really care about each other, and how much you value each others friendship. I think Ramona is just jealous….such a sad person.

    Jill,

Your apartment makeover was fabulous. The rich wallpaper and fabrics made me wish I had the money to do something similar. One of the things I especially loved was the mirrored “lettered” coffee tables that spelled the word “pop.” I think it added a hint of whimsy to your lavish apartment. I felt it was alot like you, a high class woman with a youthfulness spirit. Can you let me know where your decorator found those tables I would like to add something similar to my home to add the whimsy touch.
